Subject: IDE Drive Problem - Don't Format with COMPSURF
Date: December 11, 1990
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
PROBLEM: A customer called with a problem installing Advanced 286
v2.15c. The file server would hang when it got to the file
DSKSCTS.DAT in NETGEN. He was using a Conner 200MB drive
which is an IDE drive.
SOLUTION: Normally the solution is to run NETGEN, choose the ISADISK
driver, format and COMPSURF the drive. However, you should
not low-level format an IDE drive with COMPSURF if it
doesn't have an Embedded Servo. This particular drive does
have the Embedded Servo. But there are some IDE drives that
don't and they should not be formatted with COMPSURF.
